Ashton Hills have been fortunate to take fruit from Aaron Scott and Fenella Jinu’s 1980 planted Piccadilly Valley vineyard since the 2020 vintage. The five-acre plot of D5V12 clone sits just above 500m in altitude with a view to the Ashton Hills estate. With ample natural rainfall and access to spring water in drier years, the predominantly northern aspect of the slope provides sunshine throughout the growing season.

Bouquet
Fragrant five spice, herb de provence and lifted maraschino cherry.

Palate
Intense red cherries, satsuma plum and dried herbs. The blue fruited and velvety back palate is supported by taught acidity and soft powdery tannins.

Growing Conditions
Reduced yields from the 2022 harvest were the result of poor fruit set due to a cold spring. This turned out to be a blessing, with a cool summer pushing the majority of our harvest into the last week of March and early April. Ripening of the small berries and bunches was long and slow which has resulted in wines with intense colour, flavour, concentration and structure.

90/100 Points

“From a long-term source in Piccadilly. There has been considerable care not to allow this range of pinot to slip into burl and heat that mark many from these parts. That said, while the framework is transparent and elegant, the fruit is very light. But also sapid and attractive. Scents of menthol, chinotto, red licorice, fecund strawberry, bracken and porcini reverberate across a lightish palate. A wine of stealth and guile that should grow in stature with a brief time in bottle.”
